The winter days are growing darker and duller, but the former Brentwood Village Shopping Center parking lot is brighter and more colorful than ever! We are SO excited about the awesome new mural that has come to life in our neighborhood this past month. Thanks to artist Matt Corrado and the Bright Light creative agency—with a little help from the Brookland Manor residents— our community gathering space now boasts a bold pop of color for years to come.

The man behind the mural is Matt Corrado, an artist and illustrator based in Washington, D.C. His work, influenced by comic books, pop culture, music, and a love of skateboarding, can be found in shops, galleries, and on products throughout the United States—and now in Brentwood!

Matt was selected by an Art Committee comprised of Brookland Manor residents, our local ANC Commissioner, the President of the Brentwood Civic Association, and the Executive Director of Rhode Island Avenue Main Street.  The committee met with Matt to see examples of his prior work, and reviewed various options before selecting the design that ultimately transformed the parking lot!

On November 21st, Brookland Manor youth joined Matt to help him finish the mural and make their mark on the new community space. We had a great turnout of kids and adults who will be able to see the fruits of their labor at all our upcoming community gatherings!

First event up for the mural? The RIA Main Street 2017 Procrastinator’s Holiday Market on December 16th!
