The new year has brought more exciting changes to the future RIA community.

The Brentwood Village Shopping Center is officially demolished and a large surface lot stands in its place.

The owner and developer of RIA, MidCity, is working with independent organizations and community members to figure out an exciting new use for the empty land before it gets developed in the future.

It is MidCity’s goal to turn the lot into a community gathering space fit for neighborhood festivals, live music performances, markets and so much more. As the weather gets nicer this spring, make sure to check back on the MidCity and RIA social media accounts to learn about any events occurring in the space.

The demolition of the Brentwood Village Shopping Center is another step towards the redevelopment of Brookland Manor into a mixed-use, mixed-income community. RIA will bring brand new apartments as well as neighborhood-serving retail including room for a full service grocer.

Last year, prior to being demolished, MidCity invited out artists to decorate the exterior of the Brentwood Village Shopping Center. Later, the DC Fire Department used the building for a series of training days for several hundred firefighters to practice roof top vertical ventilation, steel roll up gate forcible entry as well as other search and rescue tactics.
